Many people believe that it is not necessary to cultivate themselves at all. They say that all that is needed is to surrender to a saviour or spiritual teacher who will take charge of their lives. While total surrender is a path towards oneness, most people are not capable of it, much less of even understanding what "surrender" means. Surrender means giving up identification with everything-the body, the mind, the heart, the environment; even the desire to be desireless must eventually go. This is arduous work and actually requires great self discipline to be free of all desires, thoughts, preferences, feelings and prior programming. To think you can profess surrender yet live a life where you are attached to anything or anybody, especially to your self image as a spiritual person, is just delusion. Surrender is a discipline of refinement and transformation which is absolutely impossible without our willing and complete participation. Then and only then, can a saviour or true master manifest in our lives.
