In any endeavor, if you have the intention to employ a technique, your mind will be caught by the the technique. You must utilize your mind without allowing it to be caught.
You must utilize the mind in order to make use of the hand. Wherever the mind goes, there it stops. A person in any discipline who can utilize the mind and employ techniques without the stopping of the mind can be a master.
Attachment and the suffering of life and death are born from the stopping of the mind. The highest state of mind is one in which you can look at flowers or red autumn leaves ans see them without stopping the mind. The priest Jien wrote a poem expressing this:
Although the flowers gave off their fragrance unconsciously,
my mind stopped on them....
how regrettable
Whether looking or listening, the highest state is not stopping the mind.
