When you say a prayer or make supplication to the Deity, there are certain things you should remember. Remember that your essence or spirit is actually the Christ or Buddha within. That's why in zen they say Buddha mind or Christ mind if you will, because that very same spirit is within you or is you. Through years of conditioning we forget who we are. We become accustomed to thinking that our ego is us, when in reality our "essence" is the true self or the true mind. That's why when some bow to the Buddha or make supplication to Christ it is really what that image represents that we are paying homage to. That image represents what our true capability is. Its a reminder to us. Meditation or just being still is the only approach that allows us to see the thoughts and habits that get in the way of that clear being or essence within. To catch a glimpse is to be inspired. Little glimpses over time allow us to see longer ones. This is the way to walk the path and allow that essence to come through. Be as a child again, have the innocence of a child, and you will regain your true heritage which is Buddha mind or Christ mind.
