My painting

Original sketch
I have always been fascinated and felt a kinship with Crazy Horse (Lakota: Thašuŋka Witko, literally "His-Horse-is-Crazy")who was a respected war leader of the Oglala Lakota, and fought against the U.S. federal government in an effort to preserve the traditions and values of the Lakota way of life. He was also at little Big Horn and played a part in defeating Custer.
There is no picture of Crazy Horse and I was always curious about how he might have looked. It is said that he wouldn't allow anyone to take his picture because he felt that it would steal his spirit. Although you will find pictures that claim to be of him, they failed the test of authenticity for one reason or another.
In his book Custer the Conqueror, William Bordeaux (born 1884) made a sketch of Crazy Horse for the book, based on a description of him by both Bordeaux's father, Louis Bordeaux, and Crazy Horse's relative, Julia Clown (aka Iron Cedar Woman). Both Bordeaux and Clown said he was never photographed and they knew him personally.
I found Bordeaux's sketch after searching the Internet for quite a while. It was amazing to find this sketch. I was taken with it and so I decided since it was a rather rough, although excellent drawing, I would enhance the sketch and colorize it. Making it into more of a portrait.
I had a strange feeling come over me that can be described as "inspirational" and worked for hours to complete it. I held to the original sketch as much as possible, and did research for the clothing colors, and style. It is known that he wore a red robe and sometimes only a red robe. It is said he got his name from soldiers in battle, because he would ride by many times in his red robe in the line of fire without being shot. He did have a scar on his left cheek which is depicted.
I dedicate this portrait to him, because we have much in common. I have found this out through research. I will mention just a few of these things. One is the Red tailed Hawk, and the other is the "Wakinyan or Thunderbeings." Since this is an original work of Art, even though it is based on a sketch, and the sketch is from from around the late 1800's to the early 1900's. I am honored to say my version or painting of the sketch is totally original and one of a kind.
